St Helens strolled to a six-try win over Salford to return to the top of Super League on Saturday.

The home side led 10-6 at half-time courtesy of two tries inside 24 minutes from Leon Pryce and Jamie Lyon with Gareth Haggerty crossing for Salford.

After the break, Jon Wilkin, Paul Sculthorpe, Lyon and Ade Gardner also crossed for Saints as the Reds tired.

Keiron Cunningham starred for Saints, who now lead the Super League by two points from Leeds.

Saints opened the scoring when Pryce took Sean Long's pass and sliced between defenders Andrew Brocklehurst and Stephen Myler.

A weaving run by Cunningham then set up Lyon to make it 10-0 after 24 minutes.

Salford got on the scoreboard nine minutes before the interval when Haggerty charged over from 10 metres, taking three defenders over the line with him.

But Cunningham re-entered the fray early in the second half after a rest to set up Wilkin for Saints' third try.

Three minutes later Sculthorpe got the decisive touch after a Long high kick had caused mayhem in the Salford defence.

Lyon kicked his second goal and also scored his second try, taking Long's pass and fending off the challenge of Luke Robinson to touch down.

Leading tryscorer Gardner then finished off the scoring, pouncing on Wilkin's high kick to the corner to claim his 19th try of the season.

  • St Helens coach Daniel Anderson:
"It was a good win against a tough team. In the first half there was a level of anxiety because we'd lost two in a row but I thought we defended very well.

"We created opportunities but, instead of relaxing and letting it come, we forced the issue."

  • Salford coach Karl Harrison:
"The guys played really well. We're a bit busted at the moment - we have no backs to choose from - but I thought Daley went okay.

"It was quite daunting making your debut at Knowsley Road in front of the television cameras but I thought he handled it pretty well."
