Mark Calderwood scored a hat-trick as reigning champions Leeds tightened their grip on the Super League with a 11-try demolition of Leigh.

Tony Smith's side were not always at their best, but when they clicked into top gear they looked unstoppable.

Kevin Sinfield, Rob Burrow and teenager Lee Smith also grabbed their share of the glory with two tries each.

Relegation-threatened Leigh had to settle for one consolation score from Phil Jones, who grounded in the corner.

The Centurions went into the game unbeaten in their last three home games, but that run never looked likely to continue from the moment Sinfield slipped a neat pass to in-form winger Calderwood.

We split the Leeds defence in the first half and my lads don't fear going up there next week

Leigh coach

The hosts hit back strongly and 10 minutes later they claimed their only try.

But Leeds immediately upped the tempo and after Smith finished off a well-worked move, Rob Burrow extended Leeds' lead with a splendid solo effort.

Smith again showed lightning speed to claim his second try after collecting Ali Lauitiiti's pass.

And Leeds romped to victory in a one-sided second half.

Leigh coach Darren Abram paid tribute to his side's conquerors.

"Every one of their players is an international. Our lads are looking at what they do and what skills they have - to aspire to them," he said.

We focus on what we've got to do and not in reaction to other teams
Brian McDermott
Leeds assistant coach

"But we split the Leeds defence in the first half. My lads don't fear going up there next week.

"They are by far the best team in Super League and we have played everybody now. Leeds are the best."

And Leeds assistant coach Brian McDermott said the turmoil at Super League rivals St Helens was not a key motivator for the win.

"I have seen a couple of the Saints comments where they have said 'we have not let it affect us', so I think I will mirror that," he said.

"We were playing Leigh Centurions this week and we were immersed in everything that they do and don't do.

"We focus on what we've got to do and not in reaction to other teams."
