Wigan coach Ian Millward has criticised his assistant Denis Betts for refusing to take charge of the club's under-21s. Millward's other assistant Andrew Farrar will now take the post instead.
"I felt if Denis still had ambitions to be a head coach he needed to work with his own team," said Millward, who replaced Betts as coach last season.
"I was sure this was the best way for Denis to go as he is still a young and relatively inexperienced coach. Sadly Denis did not agree with me."
Millward replaced Betts as Wigan coach when he took over midway through last season, but he kept the former Great Britain international on as his assistant.
He said he had looked at the club's coaching set-up at the end of the season to see how things might be changed for his first full season in charge.
"I assessed matters and suggested to Denis that although he would remain as assistant to me he also needed to maintain a hands-on role in coaching," he said.
"Andrew is of course more experienced than Denis having been a first grade coach in the NRL in Australia.
"Following Denis' refusal however, Andrew will undertake the role.
"We need to have a structure in place as our players are returning to training. We have a wonderful array of young talent and they need to be looked after."
