Saints captain Paul Sculthorpe notched his 1,000th point for his side as they battled to overcome Huddersfield. Two early conversions gave the Great Britain international the four points he needed to pass the milestone before he was forced off with a minor knock.
Saints led 20-6 at the break but Huddersfield brought it back to 20-18 before a Darren Albert brace restored the home side's advantage.
A late try by Lions full-back Paul Wellens finally sealed the points.
Saints were missing scrum-half Sean Long with a knee injury but made a superb start when Lee Gilmour went over inside the first minute.
Gilmour added another before the break while Paul Anderson and Willie Talau also touched down.
Eorl Crabtree and Jonathan Grayshon scored tries to give Huddersfield hope, with Chris Thorman adding the extras.
But Wellens, who had a poor night after taking over the kicking duties from Sculthorpe, touched down late on.
Afterwards, Saints coach Ian Millward's enjoyment of the win was tempered by more frustration at the officials.
"All we want to do is sit down in a room and say 'Listen guys, we just want a little bit of consistency'," he said.
"It's not a witch-hunt but I think it's going to get really frustrating.
"There was a lot of frustration but also of tries. Everyone got their money's worth and I'm the happier coach because I've got the two points."

Huddersfield coach Jon Sharp was left counting the cost of another slow start by his side. "Going 16-0 down after 10 minutes, we made it tough for ourselves," he said.
"You can't come here and give Saints a 16-point start but we've got some character and got it back to 28-24.
"We need to fix our starts up, because we were slow out of the blocks against Hull last week and again this week. But we should have won."
