Wakefield snapped a run of three straight engage Super League defeats by hammering already relegated Widnes. The Vikings began well but four tries in 18 minutes from Sam Obst, Ollie Elima, Jamie Field and Sid Domic pushed the Wildcats out of sight.
Stephen Myler scored a try for the visitors the first time they got the ball in the Wakefield half.
But after Domic had touched down again before half-time, Kevin Henderson and Darrell Griffin wrapped up the victory.
Wildcats coach Tony Smith took heart from his players' display after their recent poor results.
"A lot of people said that Widnes had nothing to play for, but then again you could say Wakefield had nothing to play for," he said.
"The first-half performance was very good. And I was particularly pleased about the attitude.
"To concede only one try in the first half was a record for us this year so that speaks volumes.
 | I thought we competed a lot better in the second 40 minutes |
"We've been working on our defence for the last two weeks so let's hope that can continue." Widnes boss Frank Endacott said it was glaringly obvious where the damage was done.
"You can see the signs as well as me. You don't have to be a brain surgeon to figure it out," he said.
"I thought we competed a lot better in the second 40 minutes. The score was 12-0 in the second half so we competed well.
"The defence in the first half was poor. We didn't show the enthusiasm we talked about that was needed for the game. I can read a lot into today."
