Smith will stay with Leeds until the end of the 2006 season |
Leeds coach Tony Smith has signed a one-year extension to his contract. Smith arrived from Huddersfield last year on the basis that he would stay for two years before handing the reins back to predecessor Daryl Powell.
But after leading the Rhinos to victory in the Super League Grand Final, Smith has agreed to stay longer.
Smith said: "Things have gone very well and I am pleased and honoured to be staying. The club is going places and I'm delighted to be part of it."
Powell stood down as coach in November 2003 and took on the role of director of coaching. He is now also coach of Ireland.
He insisted he was pleased Smith had decided to extend his stay.
"I am naturally looking forward to coaching the Rhinos first team again but Tony has done a great job and it makes sense to leave things in place," he said.
