Perelini has a "real aura" about him, says Ian Millward

The popular Western Samoan made 193 appearances for Saints from 1994-2000 and was a member of their Challenge Cup and Super League double-winning team of 1996.

He returned to his rugby union roots three years ago by signing for Sale and joined the Sharks' backroom staff on his retirement as a player 12 months ago.

"I like to get former players who have been successful back in," said St Helens coach Ian Millward.

"Apollo had a real aura about him and I'm really excited about getting back on board."

Perelini will rejoin the club in time for the start of the 2004 season, taking over from Geoff Evans.

"It's a good move for me and my family and I'm looking forward to the new challenge," said Perelini.

Meanwhile, Saints loose forward Paul Sculthorpe is unlikely to play against Bradford in Friday's final game of the regular season at Knowsley Road and may not even figure in the play-offs.

The reigning Man of Steel, who will be a key member of the Great Britain side in the end-of-season Ashes Series, has missed the last seven matches with a hamstring injury.

"He's got a major injury which is improving at a vast rate but if he has one clunk with it he won't play in the Ashes Series," said Millward.

"It's not a long-term problem but, if I was reckless with him, it would become long-term."
