Wonderful Willie
Paul Sculthorpe
St Helens and Lions star

St Helens confirmed the signing of Willie Talau this week. What a great acquisition that is for the club.

Willie is a beast. I mean that in a nice way.

He's very powerful, quick and has great skill. Anyone who has seen him play for Canterbury in the NRL will know just what he's capable of.

Willie had lots of offers to stay in Australia but he wanted to come to Saints. We should take that as a big complement.

I think there will be a few more players joining us between now and the start of next season.

I know that Nigel Vagana would relish the chance to come to Knowsley Road.

He is currently attracting a lot of interest over here after rejecting the chance to stay at Canterbury and I'd love to see him in a Saints shirt.

I was at Warrington with Nigel a few years back, so I know him well.

When New Zealand were over here at the end of last year, he told me he'd love another crack at Super League.

Whether there's still a place for him here after Willie's arrival, I'm not too sure, but he'd be another great signing.

He was top scorer in Super League the year he was at Wilderspool and he's only improved since then.

It's been another tough few days for Saints but, despite all the rumours that we're at each other's throats, the team spirit at St Helens is first class.

The players all get on well, everyone is pulling for each other and the coach has the backing of everyone.

It's just on the field of play that we are struggling, but we remain confident that we'll turn things around.

If you look at the table, we're not that far off the play-off positions and, prior to the game with Halifax, we've got a points difference of plus 154.

That tells us we've still got one of the best defences in Super League and I reckon we've probably got the best attack.

When we win, we smash teams. When we lose, it's by just two or three points.

The fans are obviously disappointed at the moment but they are still behind us - and I hope that continues.

Everyone knows the game against Halifax on Friday is a massive one for us.

We have to start winning games and everyone expects us to come out on top against Super League's bottom club.

It's going to be a tough game. Halifax are always physical and they will fancy their chances of turning us over.

I can't believe the RFL have banned kids from coming on to the pitch to celebrate with their dads.

Somebody tried to stop me taking my son on to the field of play after our Grand Final win over Bradford at Old Trafford.

I just ignored them. It was a special occasion and I wanted to celebrate with my family.

I've heard the argument that Super League is sponsored by a beer company and should not be associated with children.

But I still think it's daft to stop us fathers sharing a big moment with our offspring. Rugby league is a great family sport and we should not forget that.
