It was feared Stankevitch might have broken his leg |
St Helens forward John Stankevitch has been ruled out for six weeks after injuring his leg in Sunday's 30-30 Super League draw at Warrington. It was initially feared that Stankevitch might have broken his leg after he was carried off following a tackle by Nick Fozzard.
But he was examined by a specialist on Monday and X-rays revealed that although there was ligament damage the leg was not broken.
Meanwhile, Huddersfield Giants prop forward Jeff Wittenberg has announced his retirement from the game because of injury.
The 30-year-old has been dogged by a knee problem which was operated on in February but has not responded to the rehabilitation process.
Long-term future
Wittenberg said: "I knew that there was a first team spot for me if I could get my fitness up to scratch but the knee was just holding me back.
"The operation didn't cure it and in the best interests of my long-term mobility I needed to stop now and look at the next phase of my career.
"The supporters at the club have been brilliant to me in my two spells at the club and I'll be joining them at the weekend to hopefully see the boys get a victory."
