Super League: Round 11 round-up
All the reports from the 11th round of Tetley's Super League VIII (23-26 May).

Monday's game

Hull's Colin Best
Hull's Colin Best scored a brace of tries
Hull 30-6 St Helens

Hull produced an almost faultless display as they completely overwhelmed Tetley's Super League champions St Helens at the Kingston Communications Stadium.

The Yorkshire side dominated the contest from the kick-off and claimed a deserved victory by running in six tries to the visitors' one.

Saints were never in the game and a fifth league defeat of the season beckoned when Kirk Yeaman went over after just three minutes.

Hull scored again when Steve Prescott raced 80 metres to dive flamboyantly over the line and Glen Donkin's try gave the home side a 14-0 half-time lead.

Saints rallied early in the second half but struggled to muscle their way back into the game.

MATCH FACTS
Hull 30
Tries: Yeaman, Prescott, Donkin, Best 2, Kohe-Love
Goals: Prescott 3
St Helens 6
Tries: Joynt
Goals: Sculthorpe.

Toa Kohe-Love was sin-binned for his foul but Saints could not take advantage and fell further behind after 49 minutes when Colin Best ran behind the posts for another try.

Saints belatedly got themselves on the scoreboard when Paul Sculthorpe combined with Paul Wellens for Chris Joynt to cash in after 55 minutes.

Sculthorpe's conversion gave Saints hope but Hull's magnificent response soon put paid to that.

First a flowing move in the 60th minute led to Prescott putting Kohe-Love over and then Best coolly intercepted a careless Joynt pass to run in for his second.

Hull then managed to play out time with little alarm to leave Saints floundering in an unfamiliar sixth place.

Replacements: Carvell, Dowes, G. Horne, Donkin.

St Helens: Wellens, Albert, Gleeson, Newlove, Stewart, Sculthorpe, Long, Britt, Cunningham, Joynt, Bennett, Wilkin, Smith.

Sunday's games

Widnes 42-30 Huddersfield

Widnes staged a late rally to get back to winning ways and leave Super League newcomers Huddersfield struggling near the foot of the table.

The Giants looked on course for victory as they led 30-24 with 10 minutes to go, but the Vikings roared back with 18 unanswered points in a frantic finish at Halton Stadium.

Deon Bird rounded off the comeback by completing a hat-trick of tries with the Vikings' final touchdown. Team-mate Adam Hughes also weighed in with two tries.

Wakefield 12-36 London

London Broncos responded in fine style to their thrashing by St Helens with a comfortable victory over Wakefield at Belle Vue.

Chris Thorman got the ball rolling after just six minutes when he crossed for a try before adding the extras himself.

Ian Knott responded though for Wakefield with a try after bursting through some desperate London defence and Jamie Rooney's conversion levelled the scores.

But Broncos regained the lead in the 18th minute with Dennis Moran's first try of the season, followed by Russell Bawden's effort six minutes later.

MATCH FACTS
Wakefield 12
Tries: Knott
Goals: Rooney 4
London 36
Tries: Moran 3, Bawden, Thorman, Roy
Goals: Thorman 6

Thorman added the extra points to secure a 10-point cushion at the half-time break.

In the early stages of the second half Rooney looked to have kept the game open with a pair of penalties.

But London responded to the challenge and Moran touched down on the hour. That was converted by Thorman, who also kicked another penalty six minutes later to increase Broncos' grip on the match.

By that point London were in total control and Nigel Roy crossed three minutes later for Thorman to convert.

Moran capped a fine personal performance and a solid team display with his hat-trick two minutes from the end but Thorman blotted his copybook with a missed conversion.

Wakefield: Holland, Halpenny, Ellis, Newlove, Sovatabua, Rooney, Davis, Korkidas, March, Field, Slattery, Knott, Vowles.
Replacements: Handforth, Wrench, Snitch, Wells.

Saturday's game

Warrington 16-32 Castleford

A try from veteran prop Dean Sampson within four minutes of coming out of retirement helped Castleford boost their play-off chances with an impressive win over Warrington.

The former Great Britain forward, who is 36 next month, came on as a 26th-minute substitute after being pressed onto the Tigers bench in response to a front-row injury crisis.

And he almost immediately found himself in the right place at the right time to touch down after Ryan Hudson's kick on the last tackle rebounded fortuitously off a Warrington defender.

Sampson's try was sandwiched between efforts from the excellent Hudson, who dummied over from acting half-back, and winger Waine Pryce as the Tigers took command in the opening period.

MATCH FACTS
Warrington (10) 16
Tries: Burns, Briers, Smyth
Goals: Briers 2
Castleford (18) 32
Tries: Hudson 2, Sampson, Pryce, Saxton
Goals: Bartrim 6

Warrington skipper Lee Briers, who had set up the Wolves' opening try for Darren Burns, added a try of his own in first-half injury-time to give his side hope at the break.

But Cas quickly regained the initiative with Tom Saxton racing through the home defence to take the Tigers out of sight.

Winger Rob Smyth pulled another try back for the Wolves but Castleford had the final say when Hudson supported a break by Andy Johnson to claim his side's fifth try.

"It was fairytale stuff really," said Sampson. "I can feel a sequel to my autobiography coming on.

"I jumped at the chance to play again. I kept myself relatively fit in the off season and played a few games for the under-21s when they were short.

"If it was a one-off, that's great, but if the injury situation doesn't improve and Graham (Steadman, coach) needs me next week, I'm ready."

Warrington: Penny, Smyth, Grose, Sibbit, Appo, Briers, N. Wood, Fozzard, Clarke, Hilton, Guisset, Wainwright, Domic. Replacements: Gleeson, Burns, P. Wood, Stevens.

Castleford: Saxton, Pryce, Gibson, Eagar, Rogers, Orr, Healey, Sykes, Hudson, Lynch, Johnson, Fritz, Bartrim. Replacements: Hepworth, Blakeway, Smith, Sampson.

Referee: Ian Smith (Oldham)

Friday's games

Bradford 48-22 Leeds

Bradford ended Leeds' unbeaten Super League run in spectacular fashion as they racked up eight tries in a superb performance at Odsal.

In a repeat of last month's Challenge Cup final thriller, the Rhinos moved to the top of the table with a devastating performance.

In front of the second-highest Super League crowd of 21,784, the Rhinos had no answer to the Bulls' pace out wide and power through the middle.

Winger Tevita Vaikona put the home side ahead after only three minutes with his 10th try in as many matches.

Bradford: 48
Tries: Vaikona 2, Gartner, Anderson, Paul, Vainikolo 2, Pratt
Goals: Deacon 8
Leeds: 22
Tries: Walker, Calderwood, Sinfield
Goals: Sinfield 5
Paul Deacon then put over a penalty but Kevin Sinfield kept the visitors in touch with three penalties.

But the floodgates opened when Mark Calderwood mis-kicked Deacon's speculative chip to gift a try to Daniel Gartner.

Paul Anderson ran onto Deacon's pass moments later for the Bulls' second try.

And full-back Robbie Paul scored his 100th Super League try when he went over after a determined run from Scott Naylor.

All three conversions were kicked to give the Bulls an 18-point half-time cushion.

Early in the second half Lesley Vainikolo banished any hopes of a Leeds comeback when he forced his way past four defenders for his 11th try of the season.

Soon after, Vaikona sent former Leeds stand-off Karl Pratt racing clear from 80m for a glorious try.

Leeds' Chev Walker, Sinfield and Calderwood all went over to add some respectability to the scoreline but the tries were nothing more than consolation.

And to rub salt into Leeds' wounds, Vainikolo was awarded a second try by the video referee after leaping high with Calderwood to take Deacon's high kick, before Vaikona had the final say when he raced over for his second and Bradford's eighth try.

Bradford: Paul, Vaikona, Naylor, Hape, Vainikolo, Pratt, Deacon, Vagana, Lowes, Gartner, Radford, Peacock, Forshaw.
Substitutes: Reardon, Gilmour, Parker, Anderson.

Leeds: Connolly, Calderwood, McKenna, Walker, Cummins, McGuire, Dunemann, Bailey, Diskin, McDermott, Furner, Adamson, Sinfield.
Substitutes: McDonald, Poching, Burrow, Ward.

Attendance: 21,784

Referee: Karl Kirkpatrick (Warrington).

Wigan 58-12 Halifax

Wigan sent Halifax to their 10th consecutive defeat as they ran out easy winners to move into fourth spot in Super League - their highest placing so far this season.

Teenager Kevin Brown grabbed a second-half hat-trick as did skipper Andy Farrell who finished with 30 points after he also landed nine goals.

Dane Dorahy gave Halifax an early lead with a 40m penalty, but Wigan's David Hodgson claimed his ninth try of the season to put the Warriors back in the game.

Wigan: 58
Tries: Hodgson, Newton, Farrell 3, Johnson, Brown 3, Ainscough
Goal: Farrell 9
Halifax: 12
Tries: Birchall, Chapman
Goals: Dorahy, Finnerty
Kevin Brown then sent hooker Terry Newton over after a break down the right wing although the pass from Brian Carney which caused the damage looked suspiciously forward.

Wigan scored again through skipper Andy Farrell before first Paul Davidson and then Chris Birchall were sent to the sin bin

Halifax almost pulled a try back when Martin Moana was held up over the line by full-back Shaun Briscoe's try-saving tackle.

Wigan cashed in on Halifax being down to 12 men when centre Paul Johnson scored their fourth try with Farrell landing his third goal of the half.

Halifax were hit by injuries to Danny Halliwell and Dorahy but held out until 18-year-old Brown intercepted a pass from John Lawless to race in from his own half for a spectacular first.

Jamie Ainscough got Wigan's other second-half try with Halifax getting consolation scores from Birchall and Jaymes Chapman with one goal from Lee Finnerty.

Wigan: Briscoe, Carney, Johnson, Hodgson, Ainscough, Graham, Lam, Sculthorpe, Newton, Bibey, Cassidy, Tickle, Farrell.
Substitutes: M. Smith, Aspinwall, Hock, Brown.
Sin Bin: Newton (54).

Halifax: Finnerty, Greenwood, Donlan, Clayton, Frew, Dorahy, Penkywicz, Hobson, Lawless, Birchall, Cruckshank, Brocklehurst, Moana.
