Leeds Rhinos took out their frustration for a Challenge Cup battering at the hands of St Helens by giving Wakefield Wildcats similar treatment.

A hat-trick of tries from teenage winger Chev Walker saw the Rhinos move to the top of the Super League.

But it was not until the final 12 minutes that the home side really asserted their authority, with Walker running in two magnificent individual efforts from 80 metres.

"Chev was excellent tonight and had a really strong game," said Leeds coach Daryl Powell.

"That will give him confidence. I also felt Karl Pratt had a great game on the other wing."

Wildcats coach Peter Roe was disappointed with his side's inability to keep the Rhinos at bay.

"Defensively we were poor tonight, especially when you consider the work we have done on defence this week in training," he said.

"We tackled too high and you can't do that against a side like Leeds. They showed their quality at times but we caused them problems as well."

The match began with Walker opening the scoring after Ryan Sheridan and Matt Adamson had tries disallowed.

But scores from Ben Westwood and George Truelove kept the Wildcats in contention, and only a Francis Cummins score just before the break gave the Rhinos an 18-10 half-time lead.

Cummins, Adamson and Walker all scored early in the second half to seemingly take the Rhinos clear but Wakefield again fought back.

Chris Feather went over twice in four minutes for the Wildcats, but the closing stages belonged to Leeds.

Ben Walker, Rob Burrow, Sheridan and Keith Senior helped the Rhinos to a total of nine tries, in a display of attacking brilliance and defensive frailty.

Wildcats substitute Damon Keating suffered a broken nose and blooded face that required a visit to hospital, and Roe was furious with the part played by Leeds' Keith Senior in the incident.

"I am not going to comment too much on the incident but I hope Keating plays again before Senior does," said Roe.

"Keating has been left in a state of concussion and has a broken nose and a blooded face.

"The referee said he didn't know who made the tackle. I can't believe he didn't know which player attacked him."
