Even without six members of their likely Challenge Cup final team, Stuart Raper's men easily brushed aside a meek Wolves side who appear to have forgotten how to win. "It was definitely good preparation," said Raper.
"The win against Castleford did our confidence a world of good and you could see that tonight. We played some really good rugby." New Warrington coach David Plange will not have been encouraged by his side's sixth successive defeat and he faces a tough road ahead. "Any team Wigan put out is going to be a strong team," said Plange. "They played well and we came up with too many unforced errors that put us under pressure. We got to take a few lessons out of it." Wigan were grateful to keep in touch with leaders Bradford and they also looked to have emerged injury-free for next Saturday's showdown with arch-rivals Saints. Brian Carney starred for Wigan, scoring two second-half tries while presenting the visitors' defence with plenty of problems.
Sean O'Loughlin, who replaced his brother-in-law and skipper Andrew Farrell early in the second half, also scored a brace of tries - his first for the club. There was an element of good fortune about Wigan's first try, with winger David Hodgson stealing possession from Dale Cardoza before putting Kiwi Test prop Craig Smith over for his first Super League try. After that, luck did not come into it as Wigan's skill bamboozled Warrington's poor defence time and time again. Second-rower Stephen Wild tore past some flimsy tackling for the second score and, when Farrell broke through on 17 minutes, the Wigan players were queuing to touchdown. Injury jinx Full-back Kris Radlinski was the beneficiary on that occasion and Farrell also created a try for second-rower Mick Cassidy. Farrell, playing his 299th game for the club, went on to kick five goals from seven attempts before taking a well-earned rest. Full-back Lee Penny scored Warrington's only try on 19 minutes on his return from a broken hand, but he was struck again by his injury jinx when he went off in obvious pain clutching his right wrist and went off for hospital X-rays. Mark Smith got in on the scoring act and, as the floodgates opened, O'Loughlin went over twice, Carney grabbed his second and young centre Martin Aspinwall claimed try number 10.
