Castleford's last hope of avoiding relegation has gone after Widnes beat Whitehaven 24-20 to reach next week's National League One Grand Final. The RFL ruled that Whitehaven were ineligible for promotion because their stadium facilities did not meet the required Super League standard.
Widnes' victory means the winner of their Grand Final against Hull KR will replace Castleford in the top flight.
The Tigers unsuccessfully lobbied the RFL to expand Super League to 13 clubs.
Whitehaven's Spencer Miller opened the scoring after two minutes, but Widnes responded with scores from hooker Mark Smith and winger Damien Blanch.
Gavin Dodd struck from long range to extend Widnes' lead before Leroy Joe got Whitehaven back into the match.

John Gleeson claimed a disputed try for the Vikings, and scores from David Seeds and Miller were not quite enough for Whitehaven.
"I always expected a tough game and we certainly got that," said Widnes coach Steve McCormack.
"Whitehaven are a very good side and it took a Ryder Cup effort from us to get us through.
"Hull KR will be a hard game next week but it's going to be a great final and if you can't get up for that game then you should not be in rugby league."
Meanwhile, Swinton Lions reached the National League Two Grand Final, with a dramatic drop-goal from Chris Hough in sudden-death extra-time earning a 27-26 victory over Celtic Crusaders.
The Lions will face Sheffield Eagles in the 8 October match.
