Wigan winger Mark Calderwood scored a brace of tries as England beat France in their opening Federation Shield match at Headingley. Ex-Leeds star Calderwood touched down in each half as England made light work of the Catalans-dominated French team.
England's architect was Wakefield's Jamie Rooney, who scored one try and set up two others, despite playing out of position at scrum-half.
Lee Smith and Jamie Jones-Buchanan also got tries as Rooney kicked three goals.
Meanwhile, Warrington back-row forward Ben Westwood and Salford winger David Hodgson will be available for England's next two games against Tonga and Samoa.
The pair were deemed surplus to requirements by Lions coach Brian Noble and flew back to England on Monday.
But Wigan hooker Mick Higham, who was also released from the squad, will have an extended break.
England coach Paul Cullen "I'm very pleased, certainly with our defensive effort.
"We narrowed our focus for this match and didn't try to be too expansive.
"I am disappointed we leaked two tries but it was a comprehensive win and we didn't pick up any injuries.
"It was a good hit-out for us against a French side who were very dogged and very tough."
