Widnes cast aside their problems in the Super League to brush aside Barrow and reach the Challenge Cup quarter-finals. They reeled off nine tries to overpower the part-timers, but the home side might have scored first when Freddie Zitter was held back close to the line.
Instead David Mills dived on a difficult bouncing ball and three tries resulted within a six-minute spell.
James Nixon and Mike Whitehead crossed the line for Barrow either side of half-time but it was mere consolation.
Widnes coach Frank Endacott was hopeful that his team's handsome Cup victory would inspire a revival in the Super League.
The bottom-placed club ran in nine tries and Endacott said: "It will do us a world of good because the win confirmed we can do it.
"We got some good tries and it was important that we defended well when it was needed.
"The win was great for our confidence and we're looking forward now."
Barrow coach Peter Roe paid tribute to his players after their defeat at the hands of the Super League side.
Roe's team recorded a try in each half and he said: "I was proud of our effort. We gave 100%. We didn't stop.
"We were guilty of giving them some tries, but we were down to the bare bones as far as our team was concerned.
"With all these factors in mind I was delighted with the performance, but, on reflection, I am disappointed they got to the 50-point mark."
