Wigan needed late scores from Stephen Wild and Kevin Brown to help see off UTC and reach the last eight of the Powergen Challenge Cup. Last year's beaten finalists found themselves in big trouble late on against the French side, who will enter Super League next season.
A Gregory Mounis try, converted by Laurent Frayssinous put UTC 8-4 in front and in sight of a famous win.
But Wild and Brown went over in the final minutes to save Wigan's blushes.
Afterwards, Wigan coach Denis Betts admitted he was never worried, despite the exciting climax to the game.
"I'm relieved. The application and effort were there. It's not a question of commitment but choosing the right thing at the right time," he said.
"We have to give them a lot of credit. They defended really well and held the line strongly.
"We deserved to win and scored three good tries but I was never worried."

UTC coach Steve Deakin said he was proud of his side's efforts.
"At this level the game's never won. We're disappointed to lose with the last play of the game, but we gave everything we had and maybe made a few people sit up and take notice," he said.
"I could not be prouder of the lads and gutted we lost on the last play of the game. We are dirty on ourselves, but we need to learn how to play right till the end."
