David Waite's men swept aside the Australians 20-12 to take a 1-0 lead in the three-match series, thanks to tries from Paul Sculthorpe and Lee Peacock. But Britain have been in this situation before, both in 1990 and 1994, and on both occasions, lost the series.
Lions forward Terry O'Connor, however, believes both sides are under pressure. "We want to be the first team since 1970 to win a Test series and they don't want to be known as the first Australian team to lose a series in that time," said O'Connor. Robbie Kearns, the oldest player in the Australia squad, said that he feared taking the "loser" tag back home. "There's a bit of pressure on us now," Kearns, who is expected to replace the suspended Jason Stevens on Saturday, said. "We keep being told we'd be the first side in 30 years to lose an Ashes series. "It wouldn't be a good thing to be going back to Australia with that hanging over your head. "It's what the whole team would be known as for the next year - you're part of the squad that lost the Ashes!" Great Britain have named an unchanged team for Saturday's clash while Anderson is yet announce his final line-up. It is likely that Brisbane back rower Brad Meyers will come in for his third cap. Great Britain Australia (likely): Referee: Bill Harrigan (Australia). |
