McAlpine Stadium - Huddersfield The venue for the opening Test on 11 November is located just a few hundred yards from Huddersfield's George Hotel, the birthplace of Rugby League. The state-of-the-art stadium is the joint home of Super League side Huddersfield and Huddersfield Town FC. Built at a cost of around �28m the ground has been used for numerous concerts including REM, Bryan Adams and Bon Jovi. And its futuristic design means all 24,500 seats have an unobstructed view of the pitch. During the 2000 Rugby League World Cup the McAlpine Stadium witnessed one of the highlights of the tournament - Australia's semi-final with Wales. The Kangaroos were overwhelming favourites but were given a mighty scare by Wales who led 20-14 at half-time before eventually going down 46-22. Reebok Stadium - Bolton Home to Bolton Wanderers FC, this 27,500 all-seater ground is one of the most modern and visually stunning in Britain.
The �45 million Reebok Stadium will host the second Ashes Test on 17 November. It opened in September 1997 and was used as a venue for the Rugby League World Cup in 2000. The Reebok hosted the semi-final clash between England and New Zealand which saw the Kiwi's romp to a record 49-6 victory. The stadium is located on the outskirts of Bolton, just off junction six of the M61 motorway. JJB Stadium - Wigan Opened in August 1999, the JJB Stadium became Wigan Warriors' new home following their move from Central Park. Built at a cost of �30m, the ground, which has a capacity of 25,000 and is shared with Wigan Athletic FC, is rated as one of the best in the country.
The playing surface is just as impressive with a combination of grass and man made fibres standing up to the dual demands of rugby and football. It also features a purpose built police station, including cells. The JJB was not used during the 2000 World Cup but will stage the third and final Ashes Test on 24 November. | |
