Salford (4) 8 Tries: Broughton, Holdsworth Castleford (2) 15 Tries: Thompson, Orr Goals: Dixon 3 Drop-goal: Chase
Orr darted over for the crucial try in the 73rd minute |
Castleford scrum-half Danny Orr crashed over for a late try to snatch a win over Salford in a tight Super League encounter at The Willows. Jodie Broughton's unconverted try broke the deadlock in the 33rd minute before Tigers hit back with a Kirk Dixon goal. After the break, a converted Jordan Thompson try extended Tigers' lead before Daniel Holdsworth's try drew the score level at 8-8. Orr's 73rd-minute score and a drop-goal by Rangi Chase gave Tigers the points. Salford, buoyed by last weekend's stunning win over leaders Warrington, were looking for a third successive win since appointing Matt Parish as their new coach. And, against a Cas side rocked by Thursday's four-month imprisonment of winger Martin Aspinwall, they put pressure on the visitors early on. Broughton and Chris Nero both went close, while Holdsworth was held up over the line. Lee Jewitt broke up the middle and found Mark Henry before Luke Patten then put Broughton away in the corner. Cas struck back just before the break when Orr found a gap in the Reds' line and, despite losing the ball, was awarded a penalty, landed by Dixon, to make it 4-2 at the break. Chase and Richie Mathers created Thompson's space to score on the left, Dixon converting to extend the lead as the visitors started the half better. Matty Smith then wasted a fine chance to give Salford back the initiative when he failed to pass to Broughton after making a great break from deep in his own half. But Gleeson profited from a Cas mix-up and flicked up a loose ball for Holdsworth to level. The missed conversion left the scores tied before the breakthrough came after a 40-20 kick by Chase. Orr went over under the posts from dummy-half, Dixon adding the extras before Chase's drop-goal ensured a timely first win in three games for Cas.
Salford caretaker coach Phil Veivers: "The effort levels from the players were unquestionable. The front row put in some huge stints and it was a very physical game. "I am sure Terry Matterson will be pleased to come away with two points because it was a close game. "It was two tries apiece. I wouldn't say they had something extra but they got a nice 40-20 on play three and then got another set." Castleford coach Terry Matterson: "I think at the moment, Rangi Chase probably is the best stand-off in Super League. I don't think you would have too many arguments there. "He can do it when we are on the front or the back foot and that is the mark of a good player. But he has been getting a lot of help from Danny Orr and there are a lot of people doing some good work in front of Rangi. "The 40-20 kick was massive - it was a gutsy one to go for because we were struggling a little for juice at that time. It was fantastic. Those things turn games."
