Wakefield moved out of negative points and off the bottom of Super League XVI with a 20-6 victory at the KC Stadium.
Frankie Mariano's 18th-minute try, converted by Josh Griffin, were the only points of the first half.
Hull FC then hit back three minutes after the break when Danny Tickle converted his own try.
But the visitors went ahead again when Tommy Lee's try was sandwiched between two Griffin kicks, Kyle Amor going over to put the gloss on it in added time.
Griffin then kicked his fourth successful penalty of the night to secure a 14-point victory.
It turned into a disappointing night for Hull half-back Richard Horne, celebrating his 300th appearance for his home town club.
Horne led Hull out but his special night soon turned sour as Richard Agar's side suffered their fifth defeat in five Super League games this season.
Hooker Julien Rinaldi was at the heart of the move for the opening try of the night, setting up Mariano, whose try was converted by Griffin.
The first place you look is the coach and the buck stops with me.
Hull coach Richard Agar
Hull levelled just after the restart, Tickle converting his own try, despite the Wakefield players questioning referee Thierry Alibert as to whether he had actually crossed the line.
Griffin's kick edged the visitors ahead on the hour-mark.
Then an error from Cameron Phelps enabled Hull old boy Lee, who spent five seasons on Humberside but never lived up to his potential, to power his way over for Wakefield's second try, Griffin adding the extras.
The home side began to look disjointed and Greg Johnson took advantage of a gaping hole in Hull's defence, before handing off to Kyle Amor to score after the final hooter.
Griffin took his points tally to the night to eight with another successful kick as financially-troubled Wakefield, who started the season on -4 after going into administration, moved to zero, easing past Crusaders into 13th.
Hull coach Richard Agar:
"When you're one from six and you've been beaten at home by Wakefield with a performance like that, I've always said, the first place you look is the coach and the buck stops with me.
"Crowds get restless and it's not something I've not been used to since the day I got the job. Having said all that, I was taken aback by our performance and how poor it was.
"We've had a poor start. I felt over the last few weeks that we'd made some strides and I'm unbelievably shocked and disappointed that we've not won that game after the chances we created. It hugely concerned me."
Wakefield coach John Kear:
"We're back in the black, a bit better than the government. You can look at the tables and rip them up.
"I'm obviously really pleased we've won, but Richard Agar knows what he's doing. Let's hope the board of directors support him fully so he can see his contract out.
"Tommy Lee is a really good player. He had a bad injury last year but he can play. I've known that by watching him since he was a bairn. He's now 23, which is still very young, but he's maturing into a very controlling, pivotal player."
