The Hornets share Spotland with Rochdale Football Club

Rochdale Hornets have applied to host the 2013 World Cup group clash between Fiji and Ireland at Spotland.

The Rugby Football League has asked clubs in England and Wales to act as hosts for the 19-match tournament.

A Hornets spokesperson said: "Given the historical links between us and Fijian players it seems that it's a natural fit that we should host a game.

"We have a stadium worthy of hosting a World Cup clash and there is a sizeable Fijian community around Rochdale."

Ireland lost to Fiji in the semi-final eliminator at the last World Cup in 2008.
