Atkinson impressed during his debut season at Gateshead

Gateshead Thunder wing Jimmy Atkinson has committed himself to the club for the 2011 Championship One season.

Atkinson, 26, suffered an injury-affected debut season with Thunder, but impressed enough to be offered a further contract on Tyneside.

"I wanted to re-sign with Thunder because it's my local side and I feel that I have some unfinished business," Atkinson told the club website.

"Injury cut my season short when I was just getting set to make a difference."

Atkinson added: "I want to get back to that this season."

Meanwhile director of rugby Chris Hood said of the former amateur: "Jimmy made a big impression last season, especially on the field.

"He was then really unlucky with injuries and is desperate to get back to what he is all about, being a threat to the opposition and scoring tries."
