Gardner began his career at Cumbrian side Barrow Raiders |
St Helens winger Ade Gardner is among the Super League players included in the Cumbria squad for the Garry Purdham Memorial Match on 3 October. Barrow-born Gardner joins Purdham's brother Rob and Oliver Wilkes, who play for Harlequins, in the side to face an England XIII at Whitehaven next month. Former Haven players including Kyle Amor of Leeds and Huddersfield's Gregg McNally are also involved. Garry Purdham was one of 12 people shot dead by Derrick Bird in June. Warrington's Jon Clarke is another set Super League player set to appear in the game in memory of Purdham who played for Workington and Whitehaven. England coach Steve McNamara will announce his side once the Super League Grand Final teams have been decided. | 606: DEBATE |
Cumbria will be led by former Whitehaven coach Paul Crarey, with Workington coach Gary Charlton and Whitehaven's David Seeds in assistance. "Garry was a great friend of mine and this game is quite fitting, even though he wouldn't have wanted the fuss," Seeds said. "It's the strongest Cumbria team I have seen for a long time. It has been picked on merit and there is quality in there. "I'm getting quite excited about what we are doing, not just for Garry's family, the reason it's being played, but for the whole of Cumbria. "I can't remember the last time a full England team came to West Cumbria."
