Iestyn Harris won the first piece of silverware in his fledgling coaching career as Wales beat Scotland 28-16 to win the European Cup final.

Wales lifted the European trophy for the fifth time in their history and first since Harris inspired Wales to the title as a player in 1995.

The Welsh won six tries to three but Scot Mick Nanyn did scored a treble.

Wales' Ashley Bateman, Elliot Kear, Ben Flower, Christian Roets, Lloyd White and Rhys Williams all touched down.

The Welsh had to come from behind twice to claim the title and deliver a trophy in only Harris' fourth match as head coach.

But Scotland led at half-time thanks to a hat-trick of tries from burly Scotland centre Nanyn who took loose forward Lee Paterson's pass to force his way over for the game's opening try after six minutes.

And Nanyn took two defenders over the line with him for his second midway through the first half.

Wales struck back to take a 14-10 lead thanks to tries from winger Bateman, full-back Kear and second rower Flower - plus a goal by stand-off White.

The Scots regained the lead 90 seconds before the interval when Nanyn took a return from his winger Jon Steel to score his third - and scrum-half Gareth Moore kicked his second goal.

Roets, the only amateur in the final, scored Wales' fourth try after the break and White's goal made it 20-16.

In a pulsating final, Moore dropped the ball after an interception while the Scots had a try by second rower Richard Fletcher disallowed for offside.

Centre Williams then missed a glorious chance for Wales, spilling White's pass with the line at his mercy, but the pair combined more clinically on 58 minutes when the stand-off went over for the all-important try.

Winger Williams then made the game safe by squeezing over at the corner for Wales' sixth try.

Wales coach Iestyn Harris said:
"We showed maturity for a young team against a more experienced and a bigger side and that bodes well for the future.

"I am extremely delighted to get the win especially because the squad is so youthful and we had to gel together pretty quickly.

"So what they did was near on outstanding and the sky is the limit for this team as we should improve and go from strength to strength.

"We've challenged them as individuals and as a group and they have all been really enjoyable to coach."
