Wakefield ran in nine tries to complete an impressive victory at Super League's basement club Celtic Crusaders. The match was all but over at half-time with Trinity 30-0 ahead thanks to tries from Ryan Atkins, Michael Korkidas, Scott Grix, Danny Brough and Brad Drew. After the break Jamie Rooney went over twice, before Steve Snitch and Drew, with his second, completed the rout. Crusaders had two chances ruled out by the video referee before they managed a try through David Tangata-Toa. The game was initially scheduled for 22 March, but was postponed when Wakefield reserve man Leon Walker died in a match against the Crusaders reserves prior to the main event. | 606: DEBATE |
As a mark of respect to Walker, there was a minute silence before the start on Saturday's game. Centre Atkins opened the scoring for Wakefield after he collected a long pass before drifting past full-back Damien Quinn to score. Replacement Korkidas added a second from 10 metres before a kick into the Crusaders' left corner saw wing Grix and centre Tony Martin combine for Grix to touch down. Scrum-half Danny Brough, who kicked seven conversions, added a fourth try with a tremendous interception and run from 80 yards. Moments before the hooter, Drew went over after Tevita Leo-Latu and Brough had produced a smart move from a kick up field. Wakefield's hunger for more points continued after the break when half-back Rooney finished off two great moves from halfway. Snitch added another try before Drew grabbed his second and Brough kicked his seventh goal to bring up 50 points. Crusaders created little in the match and Tangata-Toa's late score would have done little to ease their woes.
Wakefield coach John Dixon: "I think we bottomed out last week - there's been a lot of self-examination from everybody. "If the last 40 minutes against Huddersfield was one of the worst we've played all season, the first 40 in this game was probably the best. "You have to give credit to the players at our club." Celtic coach John Dixon: "The team that deserved to win won by a margin they deserved. "Against Catalans, we competed pretty well in the second half and we tackled well in the second half here. "Wakefield's big men did very well, and the little men did an outstanding job. Brad Drew comes on as a replacement hooker and caused us problems."
