Gateshead Thunder reached the quarter-finals of the Challenge Cup for the first time after a convincing second-half performance saw off Oldham.

Playing under coach Steve McCormack for the first time, the home side made a slow start and trailed to a Tommy Goulden try, converted by Andy Ballard.

They reduced the arrears when Michael Knowles crossed before the break.

But Gateshead ran in four tries in the first 19 minutes of the second half to go 28-6 up and never looked back.
