Salford (12) 18 Tries: Myler 2, Adamson Goals: Wilshere 3
Warrington (6) 16 Tries: Johnson 2, Westwood Goals: Hicks 2
Chris Hicks missed a late conversion for Warrington as Salford held on to claim a hard-fought Super League win. Ben Westwood exploited a gap in the Salford defence and his try set up the opportunity which would have earned a share of the spoils. Salford had taken an 18-12 lead with three minutes to go with Luke Adamson's try converted by John Wilshere after Richie Myler's earlier double. Paul Johnson also crossed in each half for the Wolves. He opened the scoring after six minutes, forcing his way over from dummy half and Hicks added the conversion. A mistake by Ben Harrison then allowed Myler to race over straight from a scrum to level it up and the teenage scrum-half followed up his own kick four minutes later to score again with Wilshere making it 12-6 to the Reds at the break. Bridge's clever kick allowed Johnson to notch his second try in the corner after 49 minutes with Hicks' kick levelling the scores. Stefan Ratchford failed with a drop goal attempt for Salford and Michael Monaghan with a similar effort for Warrington before Adamson went over for what looked to be the match winner. But they were given a late scare before securing only their second league win of the season.
Salford coach Shaun McRae: "I thought we were the better side and just shaded it but it became a bit of a slog because of the conditions. "I must admit I thought Chris Hicks would have slotted over the goal after his earlier successes showed he was on song. "Luke Adamson was outstanding in the back row and must have been a close second to Richie Myler for man of the match." Warrington coach Tony Smith (on Chris Hicks): "I feel for Chris. He's feeling as bad as anybody but we will share this as a team. "When he kicks the winning goal in matches he's not going to take all the credit. So when we lose games he does not have to take all the demerits. I don't want him dwelling on it. "A draw could have been a fair result but our defence was probably the best since I have been at the club, apart from a couple of lapses which cost us dearly."
