Keiron Cunningham goes on the attack against Warrington |
Keiron Cunningham says St Helens have had to exorcise a few "demons" after back-to-back Grand Final losses but says their self-belief remains intact. Saints began their Super League season with a 26-14 victory over Warrington, battling back from 14-0 down to win. "People have written us off again and said we were under strength, but we've got that belief," said Cunningham. "This was our first competitive run-out since the Grand Final and we've had a lot of demons to lock in the cupboard." Cunningham, 32, said it was hugely important his side got off to a winning start. "We want to pick up as many points at this early stage as we can," said the hooker. "The last couple of years we haven't started well and dropped points. It becomes vital at the business end. "Our big goal is to start well at the beginning of the year." Saints found themselves 8-0 at half-time thanks to a try from their former player Mickey Higham and two goals from Chris Hicks. The Wolves then extended their lead after the break when Paul Rauhihi went over, but the home side held their nerve to score six tries in the last 30 minutes. | 606: DEBATE | "That was a very very good Warrington side and we knew it was going to be a battle," said Cunningham. "It's the first game of the year. We knew we were going to be a bit rusty, but we'll get better." Saints are beginning life under a new coach, Mick Potter, following Daniel Anderson's decision to return to Australia at the end of last season. Cunningham says it will take some time to adapt to a new coaching regime. "Mick Potter's still new to Saints and we're still new to him," said the Welshman. "We've still learning his stuff and he's still learning ours."
