Welsh champions Valley Cougars booked a place in the first round of the Carnegie Challenge Cup with a narrow victory over the University of Cardiff.

The Cougars won 20-18 to earn a date with the Royal Navy in Portsmouth.

Also into the first round are national student champions Leeds Met Carnegie, who will now face Warrington Wizards.

They eased to a 52-8 victory over Bristol Sonics, the first League side from Bristol ever to appear in the 112-year-old competition.
