McCormack will prepare his side to face Tonga on Saturday

Scotland coach Steve McCormack said he was proud of his players after they secured their first ever World Cup win.

A late try by Oliver Wilkes, converted by Danny Brough, gave the Bravehearts a 18-16 victory over Fiji in Gosford.

"We knew we had to be physical, aggressive and composed against Fiji and for most of the game we were," McCormack told BBC Sport.

"These players have created history and I am delighted that they have proved people wrong."

Scotland needed to win by 28 points to secure a place in the semi-final qualifier against Ireland.

Although that margin proved beyond them, McCormack was still delighted with the spirit shown after his side came from 16-12 down to secure the win.

"We really felt we let ourselves down in our last game against France and we had to have a reaction to that," he said.

"We still gave a lot of possession away against Fiji and we had to defend very well but when Fiji took the lead late on, people might have thought our heads would go down, but I looked at the players and there was still a lot of fight in them.

"We did it tough but I couldn't be a prouder coach at the moment.''

After finishing second in Pool 2, the next match for the Bravehearts is a meeting with Pool 3 runners-up Tonga on Saturday in Rockhampton to decide the final rankings.

"We are going to a part of Australia where not many people travel to," added McCormack. "But we know that in Rockhampton they are passionate about their rugby league.

"It's been a fantastic adventure for us so far and we are looking forward to the next game."
