Mark Calderwood scored two tries for Wigan in the 2007-08 season
Mark Calderwood has been called up to England's World Cup team to face Australia in Melbourne on Sunday.
The Hull-bound winger, 26, replaces Lee Smith, who has failed to recover from a foot injury sustained during England's 32-22 victory over Papua New Guinea.
"Lee should be fine for next week," said England coach Tony Smith.
Australia will name the same XIII that beat New Zealand 30-6 if Johnathan Thurston recovers from the shoulder injury he sustained against the Kiwis.
A scan earlier in the week revealed no serious cartilage injury and the half-back revealed on Thursday: "It's improving every day. I was a little worried but it's fine."
But skipper Darren Lockyer said: "He's training with us but he's not done any contact work yet so it's a bit hard to make the call yet."
Winger Brent Tate has recovered from a bout of concussion sustained during the emphatic victory over the Kiwis in Sydney.
But one definite change for the Kangaroos is on the interchange bench, with Karmichael Hunt replacing the injured Kurt Gidley.
Newcastle utility player Gidley will miss the rest of the World Cup because of a knee injury, handing the 21-year-old Hunt his promotion.
The Brisbane Bronco had been initially overlooked by Kangaroos coach Ricky Stuart, but earned his opportunity when club team-mate Justin Hodges was ruled out with a shoulder injury.
England coach Smith acknowledged his side will need to significantly step up their performance against the world champions after a hard-fought win in their opening Group A match against Papua New Guinea in Townsville.
Winger Smith was one of the only few positives, scoring a hat-trick on debut.
"We thought he would have been OK for this week but he's not going to make it," said Smith.
Calderwood had been initially called up by Scotland, but was subsequently named in England's pre-World Cup train-on squad after Hull's Gareth Raynor withdrew because of injury.
The call-up caps a remarkable turnaround for the London-born winger, who was unable to command a regular place in Wigan's team in mid-season but battled back to finish the campaign in style.
Having secured a move to Hull at the end of the season, he produced his best rugby as Wigan marched to the Super League play-offs, including a superb individual performance in the 18-14 final eliminator defeat by Leeds.
We considered every position and decided to keep it pretty much how it was for all sorts of reasons

And Smith has every confidence in the former Leeds and Wigan winger's abilities.
"There wasn't much between the two last week. It was a close call on Mark and he's got a chance this week," said the Australian-born coach.
Calderwood is confident he will produce a good display and secure his place in the side.
"Obviously Smithy did well last week," he said. "We need to improve this week so hopefully I can try and get the ball and score four tries but, if not, a win will do.
"If I play well and the team play well, it will be very hard for Tony to leave players out."
In keeping the rest of the team intact, Smith has given his players a vote of confidence, despite their struggle to overcome the pool minnows.
"We considered every position and decided to keep it pretty much how it was for all sorts of reasons," he said. "We need to improve but we feel there is a lot of improvement in us."
