By Andrew Henderson Scotland hooker |
It's a milestone in my career to play in a World Cup and this is an opportunity I'm hugely grateful for. To have all three Hendersons - myself and brothers Ian and Kevin - playing for Scotland is going to be awesome and we can't wait to make history. We played a lot together in the backyard growing up but have never all played together in the same team, so it's amazing we will now be doing it on the international stage. Playing together in this World Cup is something we've talked about for a while. Ian's only played once in 2007, Kev has played a couple of times, while I've played eight games. | I'd be gutted to see my World Cup dream ruined by my little brother! |
I hope the three of us all get on the pitch. I haven't chatted with Ian yet but hopefully he'll be played somewhere else as if he plays hooker then that means I'm not gonna play. So maybe I need to have a word with him and persuade him he's better playing at stand-off! The coach has a headache working out where to play us all. I'd be gutted to see my World Cup dream ruined by my little brother! It will be fantastic to go out and play for my family and especially Dad, who is still recovering from a bone marrow operation. He's had a really rough time. I hope we can give him a lift and hopefully stay with him afterwards, too. My folks have already bought 35 tickets for our game against Fiji on the Central Coast where we all grew up. The area is a massive rugby league heartland.
I have no ill-feeling towards Mark Calderwood after he snubbed us to play for England. You can't blame him for taking his chance but I respect our coach Steve McCormack's stance not to take him back if he didn't make the England 24.
Calderwood's form at the end of the season earned him an England call-up |
Calders basically wanted to see if he got selected by England before committing himself to Scotland, but that's not fair on our other players, especially the part-timers who need a bit of notice to take time off work. These are the players who got us there and it's right that they are given the chance. Credit the Scottish Rugby League, they have been true to their word and stood by those who want to play for the country. If your heart is with England, your heart is with England, not Scotland. We need to be in the right frame of mind and play for the badge and country - those are the guys you want playing for you. I was disappointed to see my former housemate and Castleford team-mate Michael Shenton overlooked by England. He thought he had a real shot. I've had a chat and told him to show Smithy he's made the wrong decision. He's disappointed, and I don't blame in. On form, he deserved a spot. Calderwood's selection ahead of Shenny surprised me. Although he was outstanding against Leeds in the Grand Final Eliminator, it does seem to me that one performance got him in. His form has been patchy for Wigan. Shenny has been in form all year.
As for Scotland, I reckon we have as good a chance as anyone of making the semis-finals. The format gives the "lesser nations" a chance. We've had a load of people pull out but still have a competitive squad. France will be tough for us while Fiji play some sparkling rugby league, but our goal has to be the semis. | 606: DEBATE |
As a squad, we hadn't all trained together before flying out, which is hardly the ideal preparation. It's probably been a bit disruptive that people have pulled out for various reasons. I suppose that when the majority of the squad are not full-time it is tough to organise sessions. Danny Brough is going to be key for us. His kicking game and ability to take the line on is immense. He has a great turn of pace and real skill with the ball. He's a massive asset but all the sides are aware of that so it's a big ask for him. I know for a fact that Broughy saves his best performances for the big games and will lead us well. * Andrew Henderson was talking to BBC Sport's George Riley. Andrew will be filing regular reports from Australia throughout the tournament, which kicks off on Saturday, 25 October.
