Makali Aizue scored in the first half as Rovers took charge

Hull KR ended their season with a confidence-boosting win over city rivals Hull FC in front of a record crowd of 10,197 at Craven Park.

The Robins took charge early on through Jon Steel's try, with Makali Aizue and Ben Cockayne adding further scores before half-time.

Kirk Yeaman got Hull FC off the mark with a try just before half-time and added a second after the break.

But Peter Fox put Rovers further ahead and ended any hopes of a comeback.

It was the Robins' third victory in four games this season against the Challenge Cup finalists and means they finish the season in seventh place in only their second season in the top flight.

Hull FC, meanwhile, end the year only one place off the bottom after suffering a string of injuries during the season.

Former Rovers captain James Webster made his Hull debut and although they started brightly, mistakes soon started to cost them dear.

Prop Ewan Dowes knocked on after a tackle by Stanley Gene and from the scrum Ben Galea and Jake Webster combined to put Steel over in the corner.

Hull FC forward Jamie Thackray was twice penalised for dissent and both times it led to tries for Rovers, Aizue and Cockayne squeezing over from close range.

Yeaman gave the visitors hope with his two tries but the handling errors remained and it was only a matter of time before Rovers scored again and when Fox went over on 63 minutes it effectively ended the contest.

There was still time for Michael Vella and Gene to rub salt into Hull FC's wounds with late tries.

Hull KR coach Justin Morgan: "It was very nice to end with a flourish. Sometimes you can fall into the habit of being a bit loose in the last game of the season, especially after all the lead-up to last week in terms of Hull's fanfare about the Cup, but I thought we were pretty focused about the game.

"We weren't squeaky clean with the way we performed but I thought we were dominant for most of the game. Seventh is a fair reflection of where we are. Satisfied is a word I'd use.

"We've beaten everyone above us apart from Leeds, beaten the French twice, so seventh is a good reflection and a good standing of where we are in the competition.

"It would have been nice to have got to the play-offs but it was not to be. We need to kick on from this point. We need to make sure that we make some progress and have some more consistency in our play."

Hull coach Richard Agar: "Probably the one positive to come out of today is that it is the end of the season for us. I can't find the right adjective to describe today.

"We've put enough excuses up for them this season and some things are inexcusable. Today probably summed up what we've been about this year - just not good enough, indisciplined and weak at times.

"Unfortunately you don't get two points for training sessions, you get two points for turning up and putting the effort in on a weekend.

"You might say we had a tough week last week and we did, but I think we were too easily ready to fall behind that excuse.

"We're going to have a look at the squad. It's safe to say you can't cut a swathe through them all but we'll certainly have a look at the depth and quality of it.

"It's very difficult at this time of the year with the market but I think some blokes have probably had their last chance."
