Ganson is the Rugby Football League's most experienced referee |
Steve Ganson will referee the Carnegie Challenge Cup final between St Helens and Hull FC at Wembley on 30 August. The 38-year-old had been prevented from taking charge of matches featuring Saints, his home-town club, until the ruling was changed earlier this year. It will be his first major final since the 2006 World Club Challenge between Bradford Bulls and Wests Tigers. Ganson also refereed the 2005 Cup final between Hull and Leeds as well as the 2004 Super League Grand Final. Stuart Cummings, the Rugby Football League's match officials director, said: "Steve is our most experienced match official both internationally and domestically and has been referee of the year twice during his career. "All appointments are based solely on form, and in the same way that a coach picks his best line-up for a final, I have to do the same and on current form Steve Ganson is the right man for the job."
