Two tries from Paul Whatuira helped Huddersfield come from 14-0 down to beat Hull.

Hull's Challenge Cup hopes also took a dent with both Adam Dykes and Danny Tickle forced off through injury.

Hull started well but Huddersfield struck back with three quick tries which saw them lead 18-14 at the break.

Although Graeme Horne's try restored Hull's advantage, Whatuira's second try and three Chris Thorman penalties and another from Luke Robinson clinched it.

Hull had already gone close twice before Danny Houghton opened the scoring in the 10th minute, taking a pass from Willie Manu.

Tickle added the extras and Manu was the architect of Hull's second try six minutes later, breaking through to pass to Shaun Berrigan.

Again Tickle converted and a penalty extended the home side's lead before the Giants fought back.

Hooker David Faiumu marked his debut by laying on Whatuira's first try and Jamahl Lolesi followed up Chris Thorman's kick to ground as the home defence looked on.

Then, with just seconds to go until the interval, Robinson created an opening on the right and Aspinwall made no mistake in barging his way with Thorman converting from the touchline.

Danny Washbrook's pass found Horne to score after the break, only for Thorman to bring Huddersfield level again with a penalty.

Whatuira took advantage of some hesitation by Tom Briscoe over Thorman's kick to score his side's fourth try and a further Thorman penalty opened up an eight-point Huddersfield lead.

Briscoe gave Hull a chance of a late revival but Huddersfield were able to cling on for a deserved victory which was secured by a long-range penalty from Robinson with just two minutes remaining.

Hull coach Richard Agar:

"I thought that the performance really encapsulated what we've been about this season.

"We started well, then things went against us and then there's our inability to change that momentum.

"Our own errors left us doing lots of defending. We're doing too much defending and obviously it had a detrimental effect.

"It doesn't help when you lose your half-back. Adam Dykes has got a quad injury but we'll see how he pulls up after that."

Huddersfield caretaker coach Keiron Purtill:

"We believe the six is still achievable if we look after our own destiny and get the results, which we're doing at the moment, and some results go our way in the other games.

"We're enjoying what we're doing, the boys are all mucking in and we're having a real good time at the moment."

"For a couple of weeks now we've been good defensively and energy-wise. I think Hull had a point to prove from last week but we needed to weather it and we did."
