Castleford picked up their fourth win of the season after surviving a second-half comeback from Hull KR. Luke Dorn, Michael Shenton and Peter Lupton all went over for the Tigers before the break to give them an 18-0 lead at the interval. Rovers responded in the second half and a good spell of pressure saw Mick Vella dart through to score. Jon Steel added a second for the visitors with eight minutes remaining but the hosts did enough for victory. Hull KR had the better of the early exchanges, but Castleford went in front in the ninth minute as Dorn got on the end of a clever kick from half-back Brent Sherwin for his 12th of the season. Kirk Dixon added the extras and, as the home side continued to dominate, their lead was doubled when Lupton broke from deep inside his own half before offloading to Shenton to touch down. Castleford had several chances to increase their lead, but their errors did not prove costly as Lupton picked up another Sherwin kick to put the home side firmly in control at half-time. Hull came out a different side after the interval, but Vella and Steel's scores were not enough as the 18 point deficit proved too much for the visitors.
Castleford coach Terry Matterson: "We've been performing well and not getting the points but we had to win, we had to find a way of winning and it was ugly, it wasn't a pretty match to watch. "We laid the platform in the first half and then stopped playing after half-time so there's plenty to work on still but I'm really pleased. "It was important because we don't want to finish last." Hull KR coach Justin Morgan: "We spilt the ball far too often and gave away a couple of tries from kicks and we weren't at the races in the first half and 18 points is a little too much to claw back on. "I feel like a broken record because I've said that a couple of times this year. "We were certainly up for the game but we didn't execute and certainly didn't have the same desire as Castleford."
