Doncaster are hoping to cause an upset against National League One leaders Salford in the Northern Rail Cup final on Sunday (kick-off 1445 BST). The National Two side are the underdogs as they go into their first major final facing full-time opponents. "It doesn't get any better than this, playing against the best side in the competition," Doncaster's Craig Lawton told BBC Radio Sheffield. "They have great players but so do we, it will be huge for everyone involved." The Dons' appearance in the Bloomfield Road final comes just months after the club almost went out of business, following their relegation from National League One. To add to the South Yorkshire club's woes, head coach John Stankovitch left for Widnes, leaving them without a boss just weeks before the start of the new season. Great Britain legend Ellery Hanley then took over, installing a new belief in the squad which was highlighted by their shock semi-final victory over National One side Batley Bulldogs. Lawton added: "Ellery has been absolutely amazing, he'd do anything for his players. | I know Salford will be favourites because they are full time but it just comes down to 80 minutes of rugby |
"I've never know anyone like him, he is so committed and focused to everything he does. "He has such a calming influence and knows how to get the very best out of the players and that will be vital for the final." Forward Lawton is one of Doncaster's longest serving players and has been around long enough to know anything is possible in rugby league. "Salford have just come down from the Super League so it will be a massive test for us. "They have outstanding players all over the field but we have guys with Super League experience like Andreas Bauer and Zeb Luisi and some youngsters with Super League potential. "I know Salford will be favourites because they are full time but it just comes down to 80 minutes of rugby."
