Castleford (14) 22 Tries: McGoldrick, Henderson, Lupton Goals: Huby 5 Wigan (6) 22 Tries: Richards, Barrett, Higham, Leuluai Goals: Richards 3
Wigan produced a stirring second-half comeback to earn a point against Castleford at The Jungle. Cas took a 14-6 half-time lead thanks to tries from Ryan McGoldrick and Andrew Henderson, with winger Pat Richards touching down for Wigan. But tries from Trent Barrett and Micky Higham put Wigan in front, only for Cas to regain the lead via Peter Lupton. Wigan snatched the lead again with Thomas Leuluai's try, but Craig Huby's late penalty levelled the scores. Huby's kick was his fifth successful attempt of the afternoon and his contribution proved crucial as Super League's bottom side earned their seventh point of the campaign. The Tigers had much the better of the first half and led from the fifth minute though McGoldrick before Henderson doubled the lead on 20 minutes, darting through a gap from dummy-half from 10 metres out, with Huby converting both scores. But Richards halved the deficit chasing his own kick to cross over for his 10th score of the season, adding the extras from the touchline. Wigan coach Brian Noble's half-time team-talk had its desired effect as the Warriors hauled themselves back in the contest three minutes after the re-start. Stand-off Barrett dived under the posts to give Richards the simplest of kicks at goal. And Higham then latched on to George Carmont's burst to put Wigan ahead for the first time, only to see Brent Sherwin send over Lupton for a score which put Cas in front again. But the lead once again changed hands on 72 minutes when Leuluai burst through a narrow gap to touch down. But Richards was unable to add the extra points and his missed proved crucial as Huby levelled the scores with a penalty kick in the last five minutes.
Castleford boss Terry Matterson: "It's a real funny one, a draw. It's difficult to know how to feel but we haven't come away with a lot of points this season so to get one is pretty good. "I thought we were the dominant side in the first half and the scoreline, 14-6, didn't reflect that. "We seemed to be down their end of the field the whole of the first half and couldn't quite turn it into points. We probably should have come in with a bigger lead. "Credit to our guys, they dug in and came back twice after we went behind. They were probably unlucky not to win it." Wigan coach Brian Noble: "In the first half we didn't have any ball, and the only ball we did have we dropped. There was certainly plenty to fix up at half-time. "We looked a little more lively after that and we were certainly more positive with the ball. "But they looked after the ball, ran out of dummy half well and managed to get down to our end of the field enough times to get some points. "I'd look at the glass as half full. At half-time we were staring down the barrel of a gun. "We clambered out but we just didn't manage the clock well in the last minute, we could have got a drop goal. But the reality is, they would have been disappointed if that had happened to them."
