O'Loughlin's try was his first of the season |
Wigan (6) 8 Tries: O'Loughlin Goals: Richards 2
Wakefield (4) 4 Goals: Martin 2
Wigan captain Sean O'Loughlin's try late in the first half proved crucial as the Warriors claimed a narrow success over Wakefield. Tony Martin's two penalties had given Wakefield the lead before O'Loughlin took a short ball from Mickey Higham to drive his way over. A Pat Richards conversion and a penalty goal early in the second period completed the scoring. Wakefield pushed hard late on but Wigan's defence held firm for victory. Wigan coach Brian Noble (on the 32 penalties in the game) "We're just going to drive our fans away if this continues. "The whole focus at the moment is on referees and how many penalties they have
given. "We have to find some common ground and we have to find some common sense, I
feel, because 32 penalties in a game ruins it." Wakefield coach John Kear "It was a tired-looking, slow game, and I don't think it was helped by the 32
penalties. "I don't know what the solution is. It's all right saying 'penalise', but you can penalise every bit of ruck play, and every time the defensive line is there. "It's one thing knowing the rules but it's another thing knowing the game -
and perhaps some education in that might be called for."
