Warrington's Rob Parker tries to burst his way through

St Helens: (8) 30
Tries: Roby, Gardner 2, Clough, Tyrer, Meli
Goals: Tyrer 3

Warrington: (14) 22
Tries: Hicks, Martin Gleeson, Briers, Johnson, Penny
Goals: Briers

St Helens ran in three tries in the space of nine second-half minutes to help edge past Warrington.

The injury-hit Saints took an early lead through a James Roby try before Chris Hicks, Martin Gleeson and Lee Briers put the Wolves in control.

But Ade Gardner, twice, and Paul Clough went over in quick succession just after the break.

Paul Johnson and Kevin Penny pulled scores back but Steve Tyrer and Francis Meli sealed the win with late scores.

The visitors came into the game with high hopes of claiming their first win at Knowsley Road since 1994.

But they made a a shaky start and fell behind when Roby, last year's Man of Steel, went over after five minutes.

Tyrer added the extras but Warrington's response was swift with Jon Clarke, Briers and Gleeson combining to send Hicks over in the right-hand corner.

Briers missed the conversion and with full-back Chris Bridge off with a ruptured achilles tendon, which could see him miss the rest of the season, and Matt King forced off with a calf problem, Paul Cullen's side were struggling.

Gleeson and Briers did go over for two quick-fire tries with Briers converting just one of the two to leave the Wolves 14-8 up at the break.

However Saints showed their quality on the restart as they turned the game their way with their rush of tries.

Johnson crossed with 12 minutes left to give the Wolves hope before a try from Tyrer.

Penny hit back for the Wolves fifth try but Briers missed a fourth attempt at goal before Meli had the final say.

  • St Helens coach Daniel Anderson:
  • "If you can play with commitment and attitude and play with style then it sets your season up and we did that.

"I thought we deserved it and there was some very high quality finishing in the second half.

"For round two, it was quite ridiculous for how good the competition is looking at this stage of the season."

  • Warrington coach Paul Cullen:
  • "The game changed on the Matt King injury.

"I think Saints were very smart and set Matt Gidley right through on to Andy Bracek until Vinnie Anderson came into that left-centre position.

"Until the final set of the game it's five tries apiece, so I think we deserve some credit for that."
