Lenagan wants fresh Wigan start

New Wigan owner Ian Lenagan has promised to improve the club's public image by making sure it abides by Super League's salary cap rules.

The Warriors have been docked points for two seasons in a row after exceeding the salary cap.

"The single most important factor for Wigan's integrity is to stay within the salary cap," he told BBC Radio 5 Live.

"I want our reputation and prestige, which has been damaged, to return to the high level it always was."

Lenagan warned fans that there was only 140,000 left to spend on next season's salary cap, and that there was nothing he could do until the current contracts began to expire.

"Some of the players are very highly paid and that just means there isn't the same leeway to be able to recruit additional players," he said.

"It's something that we can address in the medium term, but we can't in the short term.

"I'm saying don't expect lots of huge signings next season. The 2009 season is a different story altogether because we have players who come to the end of their contracts in 2008 and there is the opportunity to play with things and to recruit people.

"We'll be looking for players who want to play for Wigan - not just financially, but because they want to win things.

"I think in 2009 we'll have a big impact on the squad. In 2009 and 2010 we'll have a massive influence on the squad - it's just a little tricky in 2008.

"The consequences of last year, in terms of the way contracts were drawn up differently, has had a negative effect on our ability to spend within the salary cap.

"The money is there - I've got the cash and the club has got the cash but we can't spend it."

Lenagan said coach Brian Noble, who has 12 months left to run on his contract at the JJB Stadium, had always been part of his takeover plans.

"Brian is one of the best, if not the best, coaches in the UK," he said.

"I have a lot of regard for him. Over the last 20 months at Wigan, not only has he rescued the club from relegation but the fans like him.

"Having gone through 10 managers in as many years, the stupidest thing I could possibly do is to even think of moving him on. It never crossed my mind."

Noble said he was pleased to be able to get on with his job after months of speculation about Lenagan's possible takeover.

"I'm glad that the uncertainty is out of the way and we can just kick on," he told BBC Radio 5 Live.

"All through the negotiations I was in close touch with (former Wigan chairman) Maurice Lindsay and he kept me up to speed with what was and wasn't happening.

"Obviously I've been wanting to get to grips with the new owner, if that's the right expression, and I'm sure he's been wanting to get to grips with me."

We've been pretty good at my last club in relation to bringing people in at the right price and I want to do that again

Wigan coach Brian Noble

Noble said he was aware of the financial reality of the season ahead.

"It's been apparent in the last few months that we've not been able to sign many people," he said.

"I'm hoping to convince him that we can get a couple in to bolster our squad because we've got some people leaving and we need to be competitive.

"We've been pretty good at my last club in relation to bringing people in at the right price and I want to do that again.

"We won't have the biggest squad so we've got to manage that as best we can. We've got a lot of good people at the club and it's probably a chance for some of the younger players. If we stay healthy, we'll compete."
