GB hit back at 'hypocritical' NZ
Adrian Morley
Morley has won 27 caps for Great Britain
The Rugby Football League has hit back in the row over Adrian Morley's high tackle on Awen Guttenbeil.

Morley was put on report after the incident in the match between the Northern Union and the All Golds but was later cleared for the Test series.

NZRL chairman Andrew Chalmers branded Morley "a maniac" and accused the RFL of ignoring player welfare issues.

But the RFL said the NZRL were guilty of "double standards", citing Paul Deacon's injury against NZ in 2005.

Great Britain take on New Zealand in Huddersfield on Saturday in the first of a three-Test series, with Morley, who has won 27 Lions caps, among their 20-man squad.

A three-man panel convened by the RFL, which included NZRL board member and former Test match referee Neville Kesha, decided Morley had no case to answer.

Chalmers was also unhappy that another Morley tackle - on Nigel Vagana - was not looked at by the RFL panel.

"We believe the comments by the New Zealand camp are completely inappropriate and unwarranted," said new RFL chief executive Nigel Wood.

"It seems to us that they are a deliberate and predictable attempt to influence how Great Britain players are dealt with and viewed by the match officials during the Test Series and to aggravate Adrian and his fellow squad members.

"We believe the New Zealanders are guilty of double standards. Many people will recall the incident in 2005 in which Paul Deacon sustained a horrendous injury and also incidents from last year's Tri-Nations match involving the Kiwi player Steve Matai."

Deacon had to undergo surgery after a tackle from Vagana, who was banned for one match, left him with a triple facial fracture.

Chalmers added: "Morley was a repeat offender in his time in the NRL and he has a history of offending throughout his career in England.

"The Kiwis have just come out of a Test match where Steve Matai was ordered off and then suspended for two games for a tackle on Mark Gasnier.

"There were no questions asked - he was sent off and then handed a ban as well.

"This decision should be reviewed whatever the regulations are. The judicial system in place in this country is laughable if this is the way it works. Someone should have to answer for this.

"Does that now give Morley carte blanche to go around aiming as high as he likes throughout this series? You'd have to think so."

I think it might backfire on them as the lads are fired up more than ever for Saturday

GB assistant coach Steve McNamara

But Great Britain assistant coach Steve McNamara, who coaches Deacon at Bradford, said the row would add extra spice to Saturday's first Test.

"The lads are angry at what the Kiwis have come out with and have all rallied around Mozza," he said.

"I think it might backfire on them as the lads are fired up more than ever for Saturday.

"The Kiwis realise that our pack, including Adrian, will give them a lot of trouble on Saturday and they're hoping that these remarks might provoke some sort of reaction which could result in a player getting sent off.

"It's disappointing that they've resorted to these tactics. We'll just let our rugby do the talking on Saturday and leave them to the mind games."

Morley, who had a poor disciplinary record in his six seasons with NRL side Sydney Roosters, missed the end of the Super League season with Warrington after being handed a one-match ban for being sent off for a high tackle.

He was also twice put on report for alleged high tackles in matches against Bradford and Harlequins, but each time was told he had no case to answer.
