Wales warmed up for their crunch World Cup qualifier with Scotland by crushing Papua New Guinea in Bridgend on Sunday.

The Welsh were behind only once after the South Sea Islanders took a 6-0 lead through second row George Moni.

First-half tries for Phil Joseph, Dave Halley and replacement Damien Gibson put the home side firmly in command.

Further tries after the break from Gibson, Robert Roberts, Matt James, Halley, Sean Penkywicz and Mark Lennon sealed an emphatic victory.

Iestyn Harris landed five conversions while Lennon and Adam Hughes kicked the other four points.

Papua New Guinea, automatic qualifiers for next year's World Cup, added to their total with a try from Nixon Kolo.

Wales coach Martin Hall was delighted with his side's display and refused to single out any individual.

"When you score 50 points in an international, it's more than one player that's played well," he said. "It's a good team performance.

"I think everyone anticipated a closer game but we played well. Papua New Guinea are a good side. They held an Australian team on their own patch a few weeks ago, so we needed to do well today and we did."

Wales face Scotland in Glasgow needing to make amends for their 21-14 defeat in Bridgend last year if they are to join Papua New Guinea in Australia.
