Mathers had been hoping for a long run in the Titans team |
Former Leeds full-back Richie Mathers is out for the season after injuring his knee five games into his career with Australia's Gold Coast Titans. Mathers's right-knee injury is similar to the anterior cruciate ligament injury to his left knee that kept him out for most of last season.
"I brought the ball back, stepped off my right foot and felt it go," he said.
"I thought the 30 minutes I was out there were the best I'd played all season. It's a massive blow."
 | I'm going to have six, eight, 10 months of rehab and long hard work |
The injury will also rule the 23-year-old out of playing in Great Britain's internationals against New Zealand in October.
Mathers, the only British player in Australia's top-flight NRL competition, underwent reconstruction of his left knee last season before moving to Australia.
He had just broken into the first team after an injury to first-choice full-back Preston Campbell.
His team-mates have offered to pay for him to go on holiday to lift his spirits before his rehabilitation work starts.
"That's a nice gesture from the boys, thinking of me," he said.
"It'll be good to go home and have a little bit of a break because I'm going to have six, eight, 10 months of rehab and long hard work."
