Bradford: (6) 34

Goals: Deacon 4, Vainikolo

Hull FC: (8) 8
Tries: Tony
Goals: Tickle 2

Terry Newton scored four tries as Bradford put in a strong second-half display to beat Hull in Lesley Vainikolo's final home game.

But Vainikolo, who moves to Gloucester rugby union at the end of the month, got onto the scoreboard late on when he converted Paul Deacon's try.

Newton was in devastating form with three tries in 12 minutes which killed off Hull's chances.

Vainikolo's replacement Tame Tupou also scored his first Super League try.

Although Bulls started the livelier, Vainikolo and Newton both began the game with knock-ons and Hull capitalised with Motu Tony racing clear for his side's opening try.

Danny Tickle converted but the Bulls responded with Newton making up for his earlier error by taking Glenn Morrison's pass to score with Deacon converting.

Hull then edged in front shortly before the break when Richard Whiting was pulled back by Michael Platt and Tickle kicked over the resulting penalty.

The visitors began the second half confidently but the Bulls gained control midway through the half with Tupou squeezing in on the right from a Morrison pass.

Newton then killed off Hull when he raced through after another Tupou charge and grabbed another within minutes.

His fourth came from dummy half with just four minutes remaining and there was still time for Deacon to break through for a try and allow Vainikolo to bid farewell with a goal.

  • Meanwhile, Hull could be without full-back Shaun Briscoe for a number of weeks after he suffered a broken jaw in the game.

Briscoe, who had surprisingly started the game on the bench, left the field in the second half.

Centre Sid Domic and prop Garreth Carvell also failed to finish the match due to a hamstring injury and dead leg respectively.

  • Bradford coach Steve McNamara (on Lesley Vainikolo's final home game)

"In the first half we made so many errors I think we'd started Les' party 80 minutes too early.

"We were trying to give him some opportunities to score and it was the wrong way to go about it. If we had played all the game like the second half we may have made some opportunities for him.

"I thought Hull were good and the scoreline was pretty unfair on them. It was only with 20-25 minutes to go that we hit the front."

  • Hull coach Peter Sharp

"We showed patches, like last week, but we can't quite maintain it for the full 80 minutes.

"We didn't have enough of the footy to put them under too much pressure in the second half and when we did have it we didn't show it enough respect, so we paid the price.

"I thought we showed some encouraging signs in the first half. We're brave but we need to be smart at certain times but Bradford played as well as I have seen a team this year."
