The Maroons held on to claim a historic series win |
New South Wales: (6) 6
Tries: Stewart
Goals: Lyon
Queensland: (6) 10
Tries: Inglis, Bell
Goals: Thurston
Queensland's first win at Sydney's Olympic Stadium clinched their first back-to-back State of Origin series wins since 1998-99. In a hard-tackling first half, Brett Stewart scored for New South Wales, and Greg Inglis for the Maroons.
The second period was cagey until Johnathan Thurston kicked into the corner for Steven Bell to dive over.
The video referee denied Shaun Berrigan a late try for a knock-on but the Maroons held on to win.
New South Wales nearly drew first blood through Matt King, but Thurston and Inglis did well to bundle him into touch.
Stewart, who was only a last-minute replacement for the injured Anthony Minichiello, grabbed the first try when he eluded Karmichael Hunt's challenge to score, after Danny Buderus dispossessed Steven Price to launch a Blues counter-attack.
But Inglis levelled for Queensland when he picked Cameron Smith's reverse pass off the ground to scurry over from close range and touch down behind the posts.
Inglis came within inches of a second after the restart but the kick-through went out just before he could touch it down.
But it was Queensland who scored next when Bell dived over in the corner to touch down Thurston's kick through.
As the clock ran down New South Wales threw everything into attack but Queensland stood firm for a famous win.
