Hooper joined St Helens from St George Illawara in 2002

Hooper has struggled with a shoulder problem for the last 18 months and will revert to his original trade as a carpenter back in Australia.

"It was a tough decision to make," he said. "I spoke it through with friends, family and (coach) Daniel Anderson.

"I am a qualified carpenter and need to earn a living for the next 30 years."

Hooper was signed by former coach Ian Millward from St George Illawara in 2002 and has scored 44 tries and 30 goals in 110 appearances.

He helped Saints lift the Challenge Cup in Cardiff in 2004 and was also part of the 2006 squad that won all three trophies, although he had to sit out this year's World Club Challenge because of his injury.

St Helens chairman Eamonn McManus said: "Jason has given fantastic service to the club over the past few years.

"He is one of the toughest, most committed and popular members of the squad and everyone at the club will be sorry to see him leave. I wish him and his family the very best of luck for the future."
