Brian Carney announced his retirement in January 2007 |
Gold Coast Titans have released Brian Carney from his contract amid talk he may make a comeback in either code. Carney retired in January without playing a game for the Titans but a spokesman said subject to payment he would be free to play elsewhere.
Titans managing director Michael Searle said up to five league and union clubs were interested in the 30-year-old.
"Obviously the other club is going to have to reimburse us a reasonable cost but that's a minor issue," he said.
The former Wigan and Great Britain winger played a season for Newcastle Knights before joining the Titans, but before he had even played a game for them he said he wanted to quit, having lost his desire for the game.

There have been rumours of the Titans doing a swap with Wigan for Pat Richards, and Bradford also have a vacancy for a winger and the money to afford a new one after Marcus Bai's late withdrawal before the start of the season.
Alternatively, the Cork-born player could opt to move to rugby union.
He played the sport at the same school as Irish rugby union international Gordon D'Arcy and European champions Munster are thought to be interested in him.
The injury-hit province would be keen to sign Carney as one of their three additional players for the knock-out stages of the Heineken Cup begin.
"We know he's only 30, fit and healthy and he doesn't have a recurring injury," said Searle.
"To his credit he gave us the option of retaining his registration."
