It could be a big year for...
By Phil Gordos

St Helens cleaned up in 2006, winning every trophy worth winning, but I don't think they will have it all their own way in 2007.

Why? Their rivals have been busy recruiting some top talent since the last season ended.

Matt Sing, one of the most prolific tryscorers in the NRL, has joined Hull FC, Leeds have snapped up New Zealand full-back Brent Webb while Wigan have bagged former Australia half-back Trent Barrett.

All three are bound to have a big impact in 2007, but I've gone for five others who I think will have a big bearing when Super League XII kicks off on 4 February.

606 DEBATE: Who is your player to watch?

SCOTT HILL - HARLEQUINS

Scott Hill
Which position will Scott Hill play for Harlequins in 2007?
Scott Hill comes to Harlequins with a big reputation and is just the type of player the London club need right now.

An inspirational figure who can dictate games, he will give the team the kind of presence on the park they missed at times last season.

Coming from Melbourne Storm, a franchise outfit located outside the traditional rugby league heartlands in Australia, Hill should not find the set-up in the capital too alien.

He usually plays at stand-off but may be employed elsewhere by Quins, who are well-off for half-backs. Played at loose forward early in his career and may be used there again.

Whatever position he plays, Hill, who helped the Storm reach the NRL Grand Final in 2006 and was part of Australia's World Cup-winning squad in 2000, has bags of skill while his passing game is heralded as one of the best.

WILLIE MANU - HULL FC

Willie Manu
Willie Manu was a key figure for Cas but could not keep them up
I thought Willie Manu made a huge impact at Castleford last season.

The likes of Danny Nutley and Danny Sculthorpe got noticed more than the athletic Tongan, but he still showed just why Hull jumped in to sign him when the Tigers were relegated.

Powerful and deceptively fast, he scored eight tries in 22 games for Cas, a good return for a back-row forward in a struggling team.

Thankfully, his indiscipline seems to be behind him, too.

Released by leading NRL side St George-Illawarra Dragons for breaching bail conditions after being charged with assault, he was eventually ordered to do 200 hours of community service following a guilty verdict.

But Cas felt he was worth a gamble - and now he should really shine for a Hull side looking to build on a fantastic 2006.

ADAM MOGG - CATALANS DRAGONS

Adam Mogg
Adam Mogg caught the eye in the 2006 State of Origin Series
Catalans have pulled off a major coup by signing Adam Mogg from Canberra.

The 29-year-old winger had just been named in Queensland's State of Origin side when his move to the Dragons was announced.

His Origin call-up was a surprise, but the French side had clearly done their homework.

Mogg helped the Maroons win the series 2-1 with two tries in the second game and another in the third.

I don't think the Raiders were too keen on him leaving and there was some talk of him backing out of his move to France, but Catalans got him in the end.

With Mogg on one wing and Justin Murphy, Super League's top tryscorer in 2006, on the other, the Dragons should pose more of a threat in 2007.

But it will be interesting to see how Mogg fares. Is his heart really in Perpignan, or is he regretting making the switch just when his career was beginning to take off back home?

ADRIAN MORLEY - WARRINGTON WOLVES

Adrian Morley
Adrian Morley is back in Britain after five years in the NRL
There are always fireworks when Adrian Morley is around - and I expect him to liven things up at the Halliwell Jones Stadium.

Back in Britain after six successful seasons in the NRL with Sydney Roosters, the 29-year-old prop or second row remains one of the game's stand-out performers and will give Warrington some added punch in their quest to claim some silverware.

The Wolves have threatened to challenge the dominance of the top teams for a couple of seasons now, but they had to wait until 2006 for a major breakthrough, reaching the play-offs and upsetting Leeds, one of Morley's former clubs.

Now, having signed the Great Britain star, they will expect to be mixing it with the best on a regular basis this season.

Morley's experience and desire will only be a positive influence on his new team-mates - and he won't want to disappoint all those who, like me, are relishing seeing him in action.

His one weakness is his indiscipline, having been hit with a seven-game ban at the end of last season. During his time with the Roosters, he was suspended 11 times for a total of 27 matches.

DAVID SOLOMONA - BRADFORD BULLS

David Solomona
David Solomona helped Wakefield avoid the drop in 2006
A colossus for Wakefield since moving there in 2004, David Solomona now has the platform to really showcase his enormous talent following his move to Bradford.

A New Zealand international, the 28-year-old second row put all his effort into helping the Wildcats avoid the drop in 2006.

But following the club's miraculous escape, Solomona was quickly tipped to leave Belle Vue - and the Grattan Stadium quickly emerged as a likely destination.

Desperate to sign a big-name forward following the loss of Stuart Fielden to Wigan, Bradford made Solomona their number one target - and were delighted when the deal went through.

Solomona missed the Tri-Nations Series because of a bicep injury but the enforced rest will ensure he is fresh and full of enthusiasm for the new campaign.

Sure to be a major contender for the Man of Steel award.
