Winger Carney scored three tries in last year's Tri-Nations |
Wigan and Great Britain winger Brian Carney will join new Australian club Gold Coast in 2007. The 28-year-old Irishman will serve the remaining season of his Warriors contract before moving to Australia.
Gold Coast's application to join Australia's National Rugby League was accepted recently and the club will join the league the year after next.
Carney is their third big-name signing after St George Illawarra's Luke Bailey and Penrith's Preston Campbell.
Gold Coast managing director Michael Searle told the NRL's official website: "Brian was always going to be a key signing for us because he's a Great Britain international and highly regarded by most in the game as the best winger in the game.
"He's certainly been the best performing winger over the last two Tri-Nations series without any doubt."
Wigan coach Ian Millward said he was happy for Carney's new start, but that there was still work to be done before then.
"We wish him well and I know he is looking forward to the opportunity of trying his hand in the NRL when his contract ends here," he said.
"We look forward first though to Brian finishing his Super League career with
Wigan on a high."
